Representations of Anne Frank in American Literature (Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Literature), by Rachael McLennan

This book explores portrayals of Anne Frank in American literature, where she is often invoked, if problematically, as a means of encouraging readers to think widely about persecution, genocide, and victimisation; often in relation to gender, ethnicity, and race. It shows how literary representations of Anne Frank in America over the past 50 years reflect the continued dominance of the American dramatic adaptations of Frank’s Diary in the 1950s, and argues that authors feel compelled to engage with the problematic elements of these adaptations and their iconic power. At the same time, though, literary representations of Frank are associated with the adaptations; critics often assume that these texts unquestioningly perpetuate the problems with the adaptations. This is not true. This book examines how American authors represent Frank in order to negotiate difficult questions relating to representation of the Holocaust in America, and in order to consider gender, coming of age, and forms of inequality in American culture in various historical moments; and of course, to consider the ways Frank herself is represented in America. This book argues that the most compelling representations of Frank in American literature are alert to their own limitations, and may caution against making Frank a universal symbol of goodness or setting up too easy identifications with her. It will be of great interest to researchers and students of Frank, the Holocaust in American fiction and culture, gender studies, life writing, young adult fiction, and ethics.

Review

This is a ground-breaking book that pulls off the rare trick of being both theoretically savvy and entertaining and accessible. Moving beyond the polemical and parochial discourses in which the legacy of Anne Frank has too often been mired, McLennan provides a series of nuanced discussions of the ways in which Anne Frank has been represented in a diverse range of material, from canonical texts such as Philip Roth’s The Ghost Writer through to John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars.

Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death: The Grantchester Mysteries, by James Runcie

It is 1953, the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II . Sidney Chambers, vicar of Grantchester and honorary canon of Ely Cathedral, is a thirty-two-year-old bachelor. Tall, with dark brown hair, eyes the color of hazelnuts, and a reassuringly gentle manner, Sidney is an unconventional clerical detective. He can go where the police cannot.

Together with his roguish friend, inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney inquires into the suspect suicide of a Cambridge solicitor, a scandalous jewelry theft at a New Year's Eve dinner party, the unexplained death of a jazz promoter's daughter, and a shocking art forgery that puts a close friend in danger. Sidney discovers that being a detective, like being a clergyman, means that you are never off duty, but he nonetheless manages to find time for a keen interest in cricket, warm beer, and hot jazz-as well as a curious fondness for a German widow three years his junior.

With a whiff of Agatha Christie and a touch of G. K. Chesterton's Father Brown, The Grantchester Mysteries introduces a wonderful new hero into the world of detective fiction.

Review

"No detective since Father Brown has been more engaging than Canon Sidney Chambers. Perfect company in bed." ―Salley Vickers

"Inspector Morse would appear to have a rival." ―Scotland on Sunday

"A charmingly effective tale of detection . . . evoking oodles of churchy village atmosphere, circa 1953, provides a satisfyingly old-fashioned read." ―The Times

"The clerical milieu is well rendered as an affectionate eye is cast over post-war England--a perfect accompaniment to a sunny afternoon, a hammock and a glass of Pimm's." ―Laura Wilson, Guardian

"James Runcie has written the coziest of cozy murder mysteries. Taken individually, each of these clerical whodunits poses a clever puzzle for armchair detectives. Viewed as a collective study of British life as it was lived when Elizabeth II first ascended the throne, these stories present a consistently charming and occasionally cutting commentary on a postwar landscape full of industry, promise and concrete." ―New York Times Book Review

"An undiluted pleasure." ―Scotsman

"Full of witty phrases to delight the reader . . . This entertaining first volume about Canon Chambers will have Runcie's readers longing for the next." ―Peggy Woodford, Church Times

"An evocation of a more genteel era . . . Chambers turns out to be a winning clergyman-sleuth, and Runcie's literary authority is repeatedly demonstrated in the construction of his elegant tales. In fact, it is the plotting that really distinguishes this collection, and will make many more readers more than ready to follow the God-fearing hero from the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 to the wedding of Charles and Diana in 1981 . . . there is no denying the winning charm of these artfully fashioned mysteries." ―Independent

"Gentle criminal entertainment with a pleasantly old-fashioned feel to it." ―Andrew Taylor, Spectator

"The plots are intriguing . . . While the diminutive priest detective created by G. K. Chesterton led the way, Sidney Chambers is set fair to be a worthy successor. In a sceptical age this is quite an achievement. Then again, the author is a son of an archbishop. And who better to portray the sleuth in ecclesiastical clothing?" ―Barry Turner, Daily Mail

"At last, an Anglican Father Brown . . . Each tale is beautifully crafted and surprising. I hope for many more volumes." ―A.N. Wilson, Spectator

By COH
I bought this after seeing the Masterpiece Mystery premiere and I was not disappointed. I found that some of the most wonderful lines spoken in the TV program came straight from the book. I do want to state clearly that the series is only a "mystery" in that Sidney involves himself in amateur detecting. So many critical reviews are about the weakness of the mystery component. This series is NOT a mystery series, it is a series about an appealing and interesting character, his struggles and contradictions, his journey in life, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. A cast of amusing characters, including his dog, Dickens, add humor and warmth. Please don't draw comparisons with other mystery writers. This is a story with mysteries, not a mystery story!

A review from Bookworm1858
By bookworm1858
I like finding new detectives in mystery stories and the setting for this one, early 1950s, sounded pleasingly different. Our detective, as you might have surmised from the title, is Sidney Chambers, vicar of Grantchester, the quiet English village. Through the short stories in this collection, Sidney is induced to become involved in investigating several mysterious crimes. He is friendly with an inspector and his position in the church lends some authority to his actions while rendering his investigations relatively unobtrusive to the wrongdoer.

Despite the nature of the crimes (the violence of several murders and two thieveries), this is a very quiet book. This is perfect for those of us who like cozies, who don't necessarily want violence in their reading material but may not work for people who want suspense. I'll admit that there were times when it seemed too slow but I enjoyed the leisurely pace. It seems fitting for the time and place, where rationing is only finally starting to end, where televisions have yet to grace practically every household. We also get insight into Sidney's spiritual and personal life, from the way he feels about his preaching to potential wife material.

The quality of the stories varies. I really liked the story of the missing engagement ring while I found the one about the missing portrait to be quite sickening and much darker than the other stories. Although each mystery provides the framing and ostensible purpose for the story, it does not always come across as the most important element. Sidney's romantic connections and his life in the church sometimes overshadow his investigations, drawing my attention and sympathy. While each short story is self-contained, it is good to read all of them because the characters drift through, sometimes in London, sometimes in Cambridge. What we learn in the previous story provides additional color to the next.

Overall: Slower than what I had expected but not without its charms. Sidney is a fascinating character and I would definitely be interested to spend more time with him.

A vicar solves mysteries while fretting about his vocation
By TChris
Sidney Chambers is an unlikely detective. As the vicar of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Mary in Grantshire, he is more comfortable hearing confessions than seeking them out, but crime seems to have a way of chasing him. The first volume in a projected series of six collectively known as "The Grantchester Mysteries," Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death is really a series of connected stories, each with its own title, rather than a typical novel. Recurring characters include Sidney's good friend Inspector Keating, his sister Jennifer, the close female friend, Amanda Kendall, with whom he dances around the topic of romance, his surly housekeeper and his pious curate. The stories are these:

"The Shadow of Death" - Shortly after Sidney presides over Stephen Staunton's funeral following Staunton's suicide in 1953, Pamela Morton takes Sidney aside and declares her belief that Staunton, with whom she had been having an affair, had been murdered. All the while wondering why he's getting involved, Chambers chats with various suspects. Along the way Chambers manages to tipple a bit of whiskey despite everyone's assumption that he would prefer sherry. This proves to be fortuitous as whiskey furnishes the first significant clue to the best mystery in the book.

"A Question of Trust" - An engagement ring presented at a New Year's Eve dinner party disappears. The mystery makes for pleasant but unexciting reading.

"First, Do No Harm" - A woman promises her mother that she will not marry while her mother is still alive. When the mother's death coincides with the woman's engagement, Sidney suspects foul play while finding time to ponder the ethics of euthanasia. There is very little mystery in this one.

"A Matter of Time" - When Sidney goes to a jazz club, a friend's sister is strangled during the drum solo. The murderer, like everyone else in these stories, turns out to be quite well mannered.

"The Lost Holbein" - A rare portrait has been stolen and replaced with a forgery. This story puts Amanda in the forefront of tracking down the wrongdoer, leaving Sidney to come to her rescue. A predictable yarn and again, not much of a mystery.

"Honourable Men" - Sidney takes a minor role in Julius Caesar. On opening night, the actor playing Caesar is actually stabbed to death. The story strives for social relevance but Sidney's attitudes, far ahead of their time, seem artificial. Despite its preposterous set-up, the story at least presents a mystery, albeit one that is easily solved.

This is a gentle, civilized book, filled with conversation and thought rather than gun battles and thrilling escapes. Sidney spends as much time fretting about being a better priest as he does solving mysteries. Perhaps a more religiously observant reader will relate to Sidney's internal struggles, but he seems like such a squeaky clean guy that I had difficulty understanding his anxiety. I agree with much of Sidney's overriding philosophy -- his respect for privacy, his belief that "we must think the best of people" -- but a pleasant state of mind does not suffice to make a character interesting.

The stories may appeal to fans of cozy mysteries; Sidney is likable and the text is free of profanity. For my taste, the stories are a bit dull. Perhaps the characters, including most of those who are supposed to be sinister, are just too nice. Instead of a police procedural we're given a clergyman procedural detailing the life of a determinedly unexciting vicar. His work, his love of jazz, and his chaste admiration of Amanda Kendall might be enough to fill his life but they do little to ward off the reader's drowsiness. More problematic is that most of the stories fail to meet the test of a good mystery; they are just too easy to solve.

James Runcie writes in a low-key style that is fluid, sometimes elegant, occasionally stuffy, and too often long-winded. He doesn't quite know when a story should end, or he feels the need to give Sidney yet another chance to sermonize. Given my admiration of Runcie's prose, I am sorry that I cannot give Sidney Chambers my wholehearted recommendation. The stories simply lack the kind of tension that a mystery should deliver, and they don't succeed as character-driven literature, although they try to be both. If I could, I would give the book 3 1/2 stars.

Excellent Resource
By R. Petroske
I order this because I have been studying chord progressions in rock music to that in jazz and classical. I was not anticipating the full transcription with the horn parts. This is a great book if you are in a cover band and want to do some Chicago tunes.

Great book
By Clara Grace Edwards
Good book. However, some of the writing is a bit strange. It seems like some measure are left out. Where repeats should be, there are none, ect. It's just very strange writing. If youre going to transcribe these into a notation software be prepared. Notes and rhythms are correct, and thats what I got this book for. Also, not every song has a transcription for a Clarinet or alto. If it does, the tenor part is not included. So basically, only one woodwind is included for every song. Other than that this book is great. If youre band wants to do some Chicago tunes get this book

Great transcriptions, incomplete book.
By Hornman829
I just received my book. The transcriptions are great... just like the record. Solos and all (i hope i can play the trombone solo well enough). However, the book stops at page 112, and "25 or 6 to 4" starts on page 114. I will not complain because I really only bought this for Beginnings, but it would be nice to have 25 or 6 to 4 too.

From the Back Cover

"Remember Me."

These are the words carved on the dead body of a local judge's assistant . . . the very local judge who Wick Tate is investigating as part of her undercover hacking for her not-exactly-favorite cop, Detective Carson.

Wick had thought her troubles were over.

But she should've known better.

Now she's embroiled in the "Remember Me" murder case, which doesn't stop at one body. Plus, she's got the threat of her imprisoned dad and his cronies hanging over her head, the fragile shell of a family to keep together, and new evidence surrounding her mother's suicide to dig through.

She also has to find a balance between trying to be the "good" person her boyfriend, Griff, thinks she is and the "vengeful warrior girl" her new hacker friend, Milo, thinks she's meant to be.

The pressure might be too much, as secrets—including Wick's own—climb to the surface.

Wick has persevered before. But can she do it again?

What I Liked:

I have to be honest - I don't remember very much of book one. Not because it was bad or anything - I was on the blog tour for Find Me a year ago... a year is a long time for forget lots of things. Around this time last year, I was acclimatizing to my freshman year of college, falling for a boy whom I knew would break my heart, getting ready for midterms... so honestly, I didn't really remember much from the first book. And I thought the first book was a standalone, so I was really content with the ending, and didn't really commit details to memory.

Nevertheless, Bernard made it really easy for me to read this one with no trouble. It was totally okay that I didn't recall details from book one - I remembered the gist of things, but most names and events went over my head. Bernard introduced and reintroduced information in a way that I found helpful, with all the holes in my brain.

Wick thought she was finished with Carson and his work for her. But he blackmails her, and she starts working for him, on a new and dangerous project. Murders pile up, and Wick discovers new details about her mother's death, and Griff is pulling away from her, and everything is supposed to be great but nothing is.

The beginning of this one was slow. I remember I was at like, 18%, and thought I was much farther in than that. But after that, things really pick up. I found myself interested in Wick's mother's death, and in Milo. Those two "things" kept my interest in this book. I knew there was more to the mother's death than a suicide.

So this book balances many things - Wick's work for Carson, Wick's discovery of information on her mother's death, Wick's relationship with her adoptive mother, Bren, with Griff, with Milo. These relationships are confusing, not clear-cut at all. I love that Bernard crafted this book not only into a thriller, but a novel that explored relationships and the "real" things of life.

I also really liked how Bernard crafted Wick psychologically. Wick really is damaged, but she doesn't want to see herself as that way. She doesn't want Griff or Lily or Bren to look at her as tainted or evil or damaged. She doesn't like being dependent on anyone, but she'd rather be dependent on Carson because at least he can protect the ones she loves. At least she can do the work he wants with ease. Supposedly.

The story has high stakes, danger, murder, threats, anguish. I was literally on the edge of my bed in some scenes, like when Wick was breaking into the judge's office, or when Baines was in the house with Wick and the neighbor intervened. Bernard really made my heart pound!

The romance... well, I'm not entirely sure what to say about the romance. At first, I thought this series was a duology. So I thought that the direction that the author took the romance was weird, and rushed. But then I saw that there will be another book, and all was right in the book.

So here's the thing: there is a sort-of love triangle in this book. BUT HOLD ON. I actually think it works in this case. Griff loves Wick, Wick loves Griff, but the thing is... them drifting apart, it totally feels natural, like it was supposed to happen. They are SO DIFFERENT. Griff does not understand. Don't get me wrong, I like him a lot, and I totally ship them... but I ship Wick and Milo more.

Nothing really romantic happens between Wick and Milo. But it's there. And honestly, I'm feeling that relationship more than Griff and Wick, at this point. I don't know what the author will do, and it won't be the end of the world either way (I like both boys, and I know that Wick doesn't know what she wants in general, so I don't really care).

When I read this book, I had no idea that there would be a book three. I went on Goodreads and saw an entry for a "Trust Me"... I'm really excited about this. The author ended the epilogue of this book very dramatically. I cannot wait!!

What I Did Not Like:

I mentioned that the beginning was boring - it really was though. I was thinking, darn, this is a tour book, I can't just set it aside until I'm in the mood. But the book god better as it went along. So, a word of caution. The story dragged a lot in the beginning - just keep going!

Would I Recommend It:

If you like high-stakes thrillers, then this series in general is definitely a good one! I'm glad I decided to join the tour for this book (I wasn't intending on doing so - I was completely content with just reading book one and moving on with life).

Rating:

4 stars. I wasn't dying to read this book, but now that I've read it, I cannot wait to read book three!!

A GREAT series! And I'm glad it's just getting started!
By Ashley Bodette
Alright, y'all...there MUST be a third book in this series, because where this one left off?! I am feeling very unsettled! (Of course, I mean that in the best way!) *digs on goodreads* *finds next book will be available in a year* *sighs in relief*

If I thought that Find Me had me on the edge of my seat, and turning pages...it has NOTHING on Remember Me! Dirty cops, dirty judges, jealous boyfriends, new boys who understand you in a way no one else does...let's just say in the 24 hours it took me to read this, my mind was exploding over, and over, and over again. I didn't know what I wanted for Wicket. I mean, I love Griff. But I understand why she wonders if he will ever love her for exactly who she is, rather than what he wishes she would be. And Milo is totally adorable, in a schmexy, don't-know-if-he's-a-good-guy-or-bad-guy, kind of way. I felt so bad for her, and like I said before, even now, at the end of the novel, I'm not sure what I want for her...what should she do now? Who should she be with? Should she be with anybody?

And then there's FREAKING Carson...I've never really liked him, but I wanted to put him in a choke hold most of the novel. And really, he's not much better than the new bad guys in this story. And believe me, you won't see them coming. But I don't want to spoil any of the story for you, so I'll just leave it at that!

An intense, suspenseful sequel
By Meredith @ Pandora's Books
Remember Me was an epic, intense and suspenseful read. My heart was in my throat for at least half of the book, if not more. I absolutely loved Find Me – it was one of my favorite reads of 2013! And to have the sequel surpass it in awesomeness? That’s impressive! I definitely didn’t notice any Second Book Syndrome in Remember Me!

Wick hasn’t changed much since Find Me, character-wise. I mean, she has new fears and nightmares from what happened at the end of Find Me and she’s been pulled in even deeper by Carson. But otherwise, she’s still skeptical of everything and everyone and completely untrusting. She’s still protective of Lily and wary of Bren and her affections. She’s still confused about how she feels about her dad, still misses her mom – and still keeps Griff at a metaphorical distance. But in Remember Me, Wick becomes very stubborn and slightly paranoid. She worked alone before Griff, but has since come to rely on him a lot. Yet she pushes him away in Remember Me, refusing to confide in him or ask for help. I really wanted to shake some sense into her at times!

As for Griff himself.. Griff frustrated me. I really loved him in Find Me, but he was very stubborn and childish and annoying in Remember Me. He should have been supporting Wick, not pushing her away or condemning her for her lifestyle. She had her reasons for doing the things she did and if he trusted and loved her as much as he claimed, he should have been more supportive or pushed to help more. And what he did in the end? It broke my heart, but you know what? Good riddance!

Now Milo.. Milo I liked! He was kind of odd in the beginning and his awe at meeting Wick was borderline creepy worship. But the more we get to know him – and the more he and Wick get to know each other – the more he grows on you. He’s loyal, smart and has the connections necessary for Wick to do what she needs to do. He’s almost like a male version of Wick. They get each other, they understand what’s at stake in their line of work and they work well together. I still don’t completely trust Milo yet, though..

The whole Carson story line was really starting to bug me. I think it was one of my biggest issues. I despise dirty cops and he was the lowest of the low, scum and a pain in the butt! I think, deep down, he thought what he was doing would help the greater good, but he sure went about it the wrong way. I think if he’d been nicer to Wick, they could have been an epic team. I’m not sure he deserved what happened to him in the end, though he really did deserve to get knocked down a few pegs. I guess we’ll see where his story goes in the third book – I have a feeling Carson is going to end up being the lesser of the two evils…

Bren and Lily really made me angry in this book. Like, I would have thrown it if I had the physical copy of the book. As it was, I was reading on my iPad and I figured throwing that wasn’t a good idea. But wow.. At one point, roughly half-way into the book, Bren said some things and I just… I flipped out. I wanted to punch her so badly, more than I’ve ever wanted to punch anyone in my life – real or fictional!!! I couldn’t believe the words coming out of her mouth! And Lily.. I know she’s young and she just wants a family and a normal life, but WICK IS YOUR SISTER! STOP TREATING HER LIKE CRAP, YOU LITTLE BRAT! I mean, really. The things she said to Wick were so cruel.. And Bren and Lily were two characters I REALLY loved in Find Me. So for them to do the things they did.. Honestly, what Bren said is unforgivable and I don’t know if there’s anything she can do that will redeem her.

I love Romily’s writing style and the unique voices she gives her characters. The plot was truly intriguing and incredibly suspenseful. It was a fast-paced read, too. I basically read it in three sittings. Each time I picked it up, I read a huge chunk of the story – I was so engrossed in it, I just didn’t want to put it down. I loved the revelations at the end and I loved the introduction of the new “bad guy,” plus the set-up for the third book – it was all very ominous and creepy! I also can’t wait for the third book!! I’m really excited to see how everything wraps up and how it all ends.

Romily Bernard is an amazing writer. She’s created an amazing world with incredible characters. The story sucks you in and refuses to let go. I’m excited for Trust Me (the third book in this trilogy), but I’m also excited to see what else Romily does in the future.

Overall, if it isn’t obvious already, I highly recommend this book, this series and this author! If you haven’t read Find Me yet, I suggest you do so ASAP! You’re missing out on an amazing read if you don’t!

Narratives of Child Neglect in Romantic and Victorian Culture, by G. Benziman

Contextualizing the topos of the neglected child within a variety of discourses, this book challenges the assumption that the early nineteenth century witnessed a clear transition from a Puritan to a liberating approach to children and demonstrates that oppressive assumptions survive in major texts considered part of the Romantic cult of childhood.

Review

'A thoughtful work on a subject that is as urgent now as it was more than a century ago. Benziman's new conceptualization of ambivalences in educational practices and of neglect of child rights yields unexpected and at times iconoclastic insights into much studied texts.' - Professor Leona Toker, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel

'Narratives of Child Neglect in Romantic and Victorian Culture is a major intervention in the history of childhood and its representations in nineteenth-century English literature. Benziman offers a fresh, compelling analysis of familiar concepts, skillfully demonstrating the persistence of older Puritan and regulative attitudes toward the literary child within texts by Blake, Wordsworth, Dickens, and others that have long been identified unambiguously with the emerging reformist and liberatory treatment of childhood during the Romantic and Victorian periods. Rigorously argued and closely attentive to historical and intellectual contexts, including social class, Benziman's study opens challenging new perspectives on the topos of the neglected child and the portrayal of child subjectivity in poetry and fiction.' - Professor John Jordan, Department of Literature, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA

'Addressing the interconnectedness of catechizing and liberating views of childhood from the Romantics to Thomas Hardy, Galia Benziman provides an important contribution to the history of child neglect in nineteenth-century England. Her attention to representations of the child voice in literary texts, combined with readings of canonical and lesser-known philosophers and writers, makes this study essential reading in the field of child studies.' - Monica Flegel, Associate Professor, Department of English, Lakehead University, Canada

About the Author
GALIA BENZIMAN is Lecturer in Comparative Literature at the Open University of Israel and specializes in British Literature of the Long Nineteenth Century. Formerly a Fulbright and Dan David Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of California Dickens Project, USA, she has published essays in JNT, Women's Studies, Partial Answers, Dickens Quarterly, The Victorian Newsletter, SEL (forthcoming), and other journals.

My Friend Leonard, by James Frey

Perhaps the most unconventional and literally breathtaking father-son story you'll ever read, My Friend Leonard pulls you immediately and deeply into a relationship as unusual as it is inspiring.

The father figure is Leonard, the high-living, recovering coke addict "West Coast Director of a large Italian-American finance firm" (read: mobster) who helped to keep James Frey clean in A Million Little Pieces. The son is, of course, James, damaged perhaps beyond repair by years of crack and alcohol addiction-and by more than a few cruel tricks of fate.

James embarks on his post-rehab existence in Chicago emotionally devastated, broke, and afraid to get close to other people. But then Leonard comes back into his life, and everything changes. Leonard offers his "son" lucrative—if illegal and slightly dangerous—employment. He teaches James to enjoy life, sober, for the first time. He instructs him in the art of "living boldly," pushes him to pursue his passion for writing, and provides a watchful and supportive veil of protection under which James can get his life together. Both Leonard's and James's careers flourish…but then Leonard vanishes. When the reasons behind his mysterious absence are revealed, the book opens up in unexpected emotional ways.

My Friend Leonard showcases a brilliant and energetic young writer rising to important new challenges—displaying surprising warmth, humor, and maturity—without losing his intensity. This book proves that one of the most provocative literary voices of his generation is also one of the most emphatically human.

Amazon.com Review
In the bold and heartbreaking My Friend Leonard, James Frey picks up the story of his extraordinary life pretty much where things left off in his breakout bestseller and Amazon.com Best Book of 2003, A Million Little Pieces, the fierce, in-your-face memoir about Frey's kamikaze run of self-destruction and his days in rehab. Fresh from a stint in jail from pre-rehab-related charges ("On my first day in jail, a three hundred pound man named Porterhouse hit me in the back of the head with a metal tray."), clean-living Frey returns to Chicago and gets sucker-punched with a cruel blow that will leave readers ducking for cover in anticipation of the blinding bender that's sure to come. But then the titular Leonard, the larger-than-life Vegas mobster ("West Coast Director of a large Italian finance firm") whom James befriended in rehab, steps into the story and serves equal parts unlikely life coach, guardian angel, and father figure for the grief-stricken author, adopting him as his "son" and schooling him in the fine art of "living boldly":

Be not bold, be f-cking BOLD. Every time you meet someone, make a f-cking impression. Make them think you're the hottest shit in the world. Make them think they're gonna lose their job if they don't give you one. Look 'em in the eye, and never look away. Be confident and calm, be f-cking bold.

Hurricane Leonard storms into James's life, showering his young charge with multi-course feasts at steakhouses and Italian restaurants, courtside seats at Bulls' games, Cuban cigars, and an elaborate Super Bowl party in Los Angeles, all the while doling out wisdom on life and love and motivating James to stick to his burgeoning writing career. James even has a brief stint as an employee of Leonard's, though occupational hazards--like having a nine millimeter shoved in his face--prove too much for the novice bag man (though he does make enough to invest his earnings in a Picasso drawing). When Leonard drops out of sight for an extended period, his absence leaves readers aching to hear the familiar refrain of "My Son!" just one more time.

Frey sticks to the taut, staccato style that shot through A Million Little Pieces with such raw electricity. Surprisingly, the tone feels equally at home with this book's focus on friendship and extreme loyalty, and works to intensify the always-looming, adrenaline-rush threat of violence and the lure of the Fury that courses like a riptide throughout the book. Ultimately, it's a sense of hope, and humor even, that prevails and makes My Friend Leonard a stand-alone success. Despite his shady pedigree, you'll long to have a friend like Leonard just a phone call away. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Amazon.com's Significant Seven
James Frey graciously agreed to answer the questions we like to ask every author: the Amazon.com Significant Seven.

Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: Tao te Ching by Lao Tsu. Completely changed how I think, behave, live my life. Nothing else comes close.
Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: The book would be the Tao te Ching, the CD would be some compilation of love songs from the 70’s and 80’s, and the DVD would be highlights from the history of the Cleveland Browns.

Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: No way I can answer that.

Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: I've been working at the same desk since I started writing. It's old and beaten-up and black. The rest of my workroom is empty, except for some crazy sh-- on the wall in front of me: pictures of people I admire, reproductions of artwork I dig, sayings that motivate me, things like--bare your soul, be bold, page a day motherfu--er page a day. I listen to music while I work, have a pile of nicotine gum and a couple cans of diet coke. My dogs are usually a couple feet away from me. I've always worked this way, probably always will.

Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: "Loved, lost, laughed, left."

Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: Winston Churchill

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: Immortality.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Frey achieves another stylistic coup as he develops a narrative thread begun in 2003's A Million Little Pieces. He chronicles his journey out of the terrifying darkness of addiction, and the friend he meets along the way, Leonard. A gangster, raconteur and mentor, Leonard was introduced in Pieces as one of Frey's new rehab friends. Here, he pushes Frey out into the world, pampering him one moment, giving him tough love the next. As in Pieces, Frey's style throughout is loose, untraditional yet perfectly crafted: "[Leonard] offered me his hand and said good, I'm fucked up too, and I like fucked-up people, let's sit and eat and see if we can be friends. I took his hand and I shook it and we sat down and we ate together and we became friends." There's something mesmerizing about the endless tumble of words, the nonstop spilling out of Frey's troubles and triumphs. In the hands of a less capable writer, all of this cool, tight narration might numb the reader and distance the experience. Instead, this book packs a full-body emotional wallop. Frey's eye is keen for detail: the inside of a county lockup; the flat, gray Chicago winter; an out-of-control Super Bowl party in Los Angeles; the grind of living day to day—all come alive in his sparse, powerful prose. At its core, this is an examination of a friendship. Frey's extraordinary relationship with Leonard is alive, a flesh-and-blood bond forged in the agony of rehab and sustained through honesty and trust. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Frey's first memoir, A Million Little Pieces (2003), chronicled his stint in rehab at age 23 after years of drug and alcohol addiction. That struggle continues in his follow-up, which opens at the end of Frey's three-month jail sentence. Upon release, Frey was hopeful: he was headed to Chicago to join the woman he fell in love with in rehab, Lilly, and start a new life. But devastating news awaited him in Chicago, and Frey found himself tempted to march into the nearest bar. He bought a bottle of cheap wine, which he managed not to open, and turned to his friend Leonard, a charming, gentlemanly mobster whom Frey met in rehab. Leonard thought of Frey as his son and was willing to do anything to help him. Leonard gave Frey a questionable but lucrative job delivering packages, and encouraged and bolstered Frey, until a personal secret caused Leonard to withdraw from his friends and associates. Never one to mince words, Frey lays bare even his most private and personal musings, making this a raw, often visceral, reading experience. With Frey's emotions so close to the surface, it's impossible not to care about Frey's struggles to reintegrate into society and prosper. Another powerful read from a talented, dynamic author. DNF
By Erika Lynn
I purchased this book for my mother-in-law (to be) knowing that it was the book following A Million Little Pieces, which I enjoyed. I took this book with me to jury duty (oh what fun!) and had absolutely nothing better then to sit in a chair and read, or I could play my NintendoDS. Well, needless to say, after about 130 pages I just couldn't do it any longer. It was SOOOO booorrriiinnngggg! I mean I was extremely bored and annoyed as it is because I'm clearly sitting in this room of other potential jurors who are just as bored and annoyed as I am for 9 hours a day. You'd think I would've taken what I had and ran with it. Nope, I'd rather watch paint dry then read this book- it was terrible. It really makes me think, too, because A Million Little Pieces was so enjoyable to me and I related tremendously to it. This one, not so much.

What little I did read about the main characters love affair wasn't at all enticing. The only emotion I felt throughout the 130ish pages that I read was sympathy... I know it is very hard living in this world with nothing but the clothes on your back. It was quite odd that his friend just lent him 25,000$- which makes me think that this story was also one of Frey's phonies (A Million Little Pieces turned out to be fictional, although it was supposed to be a memoir, of sorts). I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Sorry Frey, I wasn't pleased with this one particularly. I tried!

Great read!
By Allie K.
Page turner with a satisfying storyline, well-written (despite lacking ANY grammar/punctuation/normal dialogue!) I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. Frey can depict a fictional human in an authentic light (except EVERYONE in the story smokes cigarettes, and it's the 90s...) I really felt what the protagonist felt--the highs and lows. Just ordered my second Frey book!

Every bit as lovely as AMLP; Frey is a truly talented author!
By Doctor Gaines
Having now read three of James Frey's four published works (not counting that weird pseudonym-series about the X-Men kids or whatever they are), I have come to consider myself a solidified fan. I care not what he made up or exaggerated in the controversial best-seller A Million Little Pieces, because that's still a damn good book, and his talent for minimalist prose is hard to ignore. My Friend Leonard is a `kind-of' follow-up novel, picking up shortly after where A Million Little Pieces left off to find James Frey writing in the first person about a somewhat-fictionalized version of himself.

It begins with Frey in jail for a brief period following his completion of drug and alcohol rehab, then getting out of jail and receiving some horrific news (this news is actually revealed in the epilogue of AMLP, but further detail is given in this narrative). In the aftermath of an event that severely rattles James's recently-free-from-jail existence, he comes dangerously close to undoing everything he accomplished in rehab by dealing with extreme temptation to drink again (which would inevitably lead to harder substances). This battle with the harsh echoes of Frey's past addiction are prominent in the first half of the story, and he even keeps a sealed bottle of cheap wine with him at all times as a reminder to not drink; a defiant expression of great willpower to refuse alcohol, even though it is available to him every moment.

Before long, Leonard is introduced: a charming, handsome, mysteriously wealthy fifty-something whom James had met and befriended while they were in rehab together. Leonard seeks Frey out and expresses a desire to `adopt' him in a way; to look out for James and care for him in a father-like relationship. Mind you, Frey is jobless and completely broke upon leaving jail, meanwhile fighting grief and teetering on the edge of falling back into addiction. Leonard has a particular fondness for James, as well as the means to provide for him, so their relationship is taken to a new level which changes James's life in some big ways. Leonard even takes to calling James `My son' for the remainder of the book, and while Frey finds this somewhat silly and strange, he is thankful to have such a generous friend in a dark time.

James makes his way through several ultra low-end jobs, including one as a bouncer at a dive bar. Eventually he is offered a position by Leonard, a position that is very loose and undefined, even a bit shady. James earns a great deal of money by running `errands' for Leonard, though he spends very little of it and does not count his wealth as much.

This description so far probably sounds very simple and rather uninteresting. The narrative is simple, but not in a boring or pointless way. It is, at the heart, the story of a man unfolding and coming to a place where he is finally taking care of himself, growing up, and finding joy in places other than self-destruction. This comes through great pain and loss, but the redemptive quality is thus all the more sweet. This is also the story of a deep and sacred friendship, one that mirrors the best father/son scenario one could imagine.

James Frey's writing is loose and minimalist in the sense that he intentionally excludes most punctuation, save periods and commas, and also utilizes multiple run-on sentences. While these two qualities may sound like simply the bad habits of a lazy writer, they are executed so well that it ends up giving the piece a very stark, human-thought-process sort of realism. When things get intense or very sad and the character smashes four or five sentences into one mad dash, the severity of the moment is felt because that's the way our minds tend to blur everything together under stress. At other points his dialogue is defined by beautiful, subtle honesty, and it is through the conversations in the book (including the ones going on in James's head) that really bring out the true attributes of each character.

My Friend Leonard was an easy read and a poetic delight. The story is plain in subject, but rich in character, delicate observation, and authentic interactions. Like everything I've read from Frey, there is great humor in this story, as well as loss and sadness that are gripping around your heart to rip it violently out of your chest. Again, this is how life is, is it not?

If you've not read A Million Little Pieces, I would recommend being introduced to Frey's work that way, though it is not necessary material to enjoy My Friend Leonard as a stand-alone. Either way, I would highly recommend any and all of his books to any reader with an appreciation for real people going through real circumstances interlaced with lovely prose and keen observation.
