nice large print, no idioms, no iOS app

I bought this book because it is easier to read than my pocket book. very nice large sized print. handsome design. but this book does not compare to Barron's pocket Verbs by Christopher Kendris. (I am now wondering if there is a full sized Barron's that I should have bought). The Barron's is superior for one simple reason. At the bottom of each page there is a list of words, sentences, and expressions related to this verb. Very very helpful as some verbs are used in many idiomatic and idiosyncratic ways.

Conjugations on Good Paper, but not much into sample sentences.

This has a lot of verb form conjugations in good layout, and contains a good explanation of the specific verb tenses. This book does not feature verbs in sentences as much as some other verb book does.
The Print is very readable, and the Paper is very good. Some verb exercises are included.
More sentences would be a useful addition to the conjugations.

Necessary for all Spanish students!

Necessary reference book for all Spanish students! This is so much more helpful than my textbook or using google. I love having all the tenses written out on one page. I'm at the end of my second semester of college Spanish, and haven't yet looked for a verb that wasn't in there.

About the Author
Patrick H. O’Neil is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University. Professor O’Neil’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of authoritarianism and democratization. His past research focused on Eastern Europe, and his current research deals with the Middle East, particularly Iran. His publications include Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist Worker’s Party “Reform Circles” and the Collapse of Communism and Communicating Democracy: The Media and Political Transitions (editor).

Karl Fields is Professor of Politics and Government and Director of Asian Studies at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He has Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Fields’ teaching and research interests include various topics of East Asian political economy, including government-business relations, economic reform and regional integration. His publications include Enterprise and the State in Korea and Taiwan (1995).

Don Share is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University. He teaches comparative politics and Latin American Politics and has published widely on democratization and Spanish politics. His books include The Making of Spanish Democracy and Dilemmas of Social Democracy.

The finest book on the origin, history and uses of Cannabis

"Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany" is completely comprehensive in its treatment of the topic. I have read dozens and dozens of books about cannabis, but none come close to matching this book's scope. What makes the book truly great is that it provides so much material that will be of interest to anyone intrigued by this multipurpose plant.

The book's authors, Robert Connell Clarke and Mark Merlin, bring decades of experience to this magnum opus. Because Clarke and Merlin have spent considerable time as field researchers, their experience with the plant on every continent informs their writing with "ground truth". And that's why I consider the work to be seminal.

I met Mark Merlin eighteen months ago and asked if he and Robert Clarke would consider letting me read this book as they prepared it for publication. They consented. Lucky me. This is a superb book and I simply loved reading it. I've actually read it a few times, because there is so much interesting and detailed material within.

Nearly every single aspect of how human beings use the cannabis plant is covered within: from discreet hemp cultivation in Japan to be woven into ritual garments for the Imperial Family to breeding of contemporary drug cultivars in the Netherlands and California. Each chapter introduces fascinating and compelling scholarship, illustrated by excellent photographs from Clarke's collection and very informative maps. One of the book's most interesting features is the examination of how cannabis has evolved into fiber and drug plants over the millennia. Clarke and Merlin propose a very persuasive and well-supported taxonomy for the plant.

As massive as the book is, I truly wish there was more, and that's my highest praise.

I bought this after meeting Robert Clarke. It was probably one of those things I would have never bought if I hadn't met the guy. I'm really glad I got to meet this guy. Because this has got to be one of the most interesting books I've read in years.

There is a passage early in Augusten Burroughs's harrowing and highly entertaining memoir, Running with Scissors, that speaks volumes about the author. While going to the garbage dump with his father, young Augusten spots a chipped, glass-top coffee table that he longs to bring home. "I knew I could hide the chip by fanning a display of magazines on the surface, like in a doctor's office," he writes, "And it certainly wouldn't be dirty after I polished it with Windex for three hours." There were certainly numerous chips in the childhood Burroughs describes: an alcoholic father, an unstable mother who gives him up for adoption to her therapist, and an adolescence spent as part of the therapist's eccentric extended family, gobbling prescription meds and fooling around with both an old electroshock machine and a pedophile who lives in a shed out back. But just as he dreamed of doing with that old table, Burroughs employs a vigorous program of decoration and fervent polishing to a life that many would have simply thrown in a landfill. Despite her abandonment, he never gives up on his increasingly unbalanced mother. And rather than despair about his lot, he glamorizes it: planning a "beauty empire" and performing an a capella version of "You Light Up My Life" at a local mental ward. Burroughs's perspective achieves a crucial balance for a memoir: emotional but not self-involved, observant but not clinical, funny but not deliberately comic. "Bookman gave me attention. We would go for long walks and talk about all sorts of things. Like how awful the nuns were in his Catholic school when he was a kid and how you have to roll your lips over your teeth when you give a blowjob," writes Burroughs (Sellevision) about his affair, at age 13, with the 33-year-old son of his mother's psychiatrist. That his mother sent him to live with her shrink (who felt that the affair was good therapy for Burroughs) shows that this is not just another 1980s coming-of-age story. The son of a poet with a "wild mental imbalance" and a professor with a "pitch-black dark side," Burroughs is sent to live with Dr. Finch when his parents separate and his mother comes out as a lesbian. While life in the Finch household is often overwhelming (the doctor talks about masturbating to photos of Golda Meir while his wife rages about his adulterous behavior), Burroughs learns "your life [is] your own and no adult should be allowed to shape it for you." There are wonderful moments of paradoxical humor Burroughs, who accepts his homosexuality as a teen, rejects the squeaky-clean pop icon Anita Bryant because she was "tacky and classless" as well as some horrifying moments, as when one of Finch's daughters has a semi-breakdown and thinks that her cat has come back from the dead. Beautifully written with a finely tuned sense of style and wit the occasional clich‚ ("Life would be fabric-softener, tuna-salad-on-white, PTA-meeting normal") stands out anomalously this memoir of a nightmarish youth is both compulsively entertaining and tremendously provocative.

This memoir by Burroughs is certainly unique; among other adventures, he recounts how his mother's psychiatrist took her to a motel for therapy, while at home the kids chopped a hole in the roof to make the kitchen brighter. Not all craziness, though, this account reveals the feelings of sadness and dislocation this unusual upbringing brought upon Burroughs and his friends. His early family life was characterized by his parents' break-and-destroy fights, and after his parents separated, his mother practically abandoned Burroughs in hopes of achieving fame as a poet. At 12, he went to live with the family (and a few patients) of his mother's psychiatrist. At the doctor's home, children did as they wished: they skipped school, ate whatever they wanted, engaged in whatever sexual adventures came along, and trashed the house and everything in it, while the mother watched TV and occasionally dusted. Burroughs has written an entertaining yet horrifying account that isn't for the squeamish: the scatological content and explicit homosexual episodes may limit its appeal. Another rehash of a dysfunctional family

I bought Running With Scissors after reading his elder brother's account of his discovery that he was a victim of Asberger's Syndrome. (John Elder Robison: Look Me in the Eye.) I found Burrough's book to be another rehash of a dysfunctional family. Wile interesting, there was really nothing new that has not been alluded to in other "tell-all" narratives about dysfunctional families. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book was ta the fictional names of characters in Running With Scissors are identified with their real names (I assume) in Look Me in the Eye.

Disturbing

I can't recommend this book due to some of the graphically descriptive sex passages. They are not meant to titillate, merely to illustrate the chaos of the author's upbringing, if it can be called that. They are included in the same matter-of-fact narrative style as all the other bizarre and off-kilter events. The reader is left with a sense of wonder that the author made it to adulthood at all. The takeaway here, for me, is gratitude for my comparatively normal upbringing, and the reminder to suspend judgment of another person.

I Could Not Put This Down!

"Running with Scissors: A Memoir", is Augusten Burroughs first published memoir. A friend recommended this book to me. I never heard of the author, until this book. I was not able to put it down. It is very well written. He details very personal events that happened to him when he was young. Burroughs gives a detailed account of his sexual relationship with an adult male, when he was just a minor. He is very open about his homosexuality, which is a very bold and honest account. "Running with Scissors" is very graphic in its sexual content and is for adult readers only. We learn about the author's life, he leaves nothing out. I highly recommend this book to you.

Note: After reading this, I was hooked on learning about the author's life. So, I immediately purchased all his other memoirs and read them in order. They were all excellent and well written. I admire him for his boldness and honesty.

About the Author
Nikolai Gogol (1809–1852) was the son of a Ukrainian gentleman farmer who was the author of several folk comedies. He attended a variety of boarding schools, where he proved an indifferent student but was admired for his theatrical abilities. In 1828 he moved to St. Petersburg and began to publish stories, and by the mid-1830s he had established himself in the literary world and been warmly praised by Pushkin. In 1836, his play The Inspector-General was attacked as immoral, and he left Russia, remaining abroad for most of the next dozen years. During that time he wrote two of his best-known stories, “The Nose” and “The Overcoat,” and in 1842 he published the first section of his masterpiece Dead Souls. Gogol became increasingly religious as the years passed, and in 1847 he became the disciple of an Orthodox priest who influenced him to burn the second part of Dead Souls and then abandon writing altogether. After undertaking an extreme fast, he died at the age of forty-two.

Anna Summers (translator) is the editor and translator of two books by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya, There Once Lived a Mother Who Loved Her Children, Until They Moved Back In: Three Novellas and There Once Lived a Girl Who Seduced Her Sister’s Husband, and He Hanged Himself: Love Stories, and the coeditor and cotranslator of Petrushevskaya’s There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby: Scary Fairy Tales. Born and raised in Moscow, she now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she is the literary editor of The Baffler.

Konstantin Makovsky (illustrator; 1839–1915) was one of the most celebrated artists in the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century.
 
Igor Grabar (illustrator; 1871–1960) was a student of Konstantin Makovsky’s, and a celebrated painter in his own right.  He later became one of the premier art administrators in the Soviet Union, personally advising Joseph Stalin.

Aleksei Kivshenko (illustrator; 1851–1895) was a Russian painter acclaimed for his depictions of historical subjects, especially battles.

THE DAY OF CHRISTMAS EVE ENDED, AND the night began, cold and clear. The stars and the crescent moon shone brightly upon the Christian world, helping all the good folks welcome the birth of our Savior. The cold grew sharper, yet the night was so quiet that one could hear the snow squeak under a traveler’s boots from half a mile away. Caroling hadn’t yet begun; village youths weren’t yet crowded outside the windows waiting for treats; the moon alone peeked through, as though inviting the girls to finish up their toilette and run out onto the clean, sparkling snow. Just then one of the chimneys began to belch clouds of black smoke, and along with them, straddling a broom, flew out a witch. If Sorochintsy’s property assessor happened to be passing by on a troika of horses in his resplendent winter attire, he surely would have noticed the witch, for that remarkable man noticed everything: every piglet, every bolt of cloth in a housewife’s trunk, each household article her husband left at the tavern on Sunday. But, unfortunately, the assessor wasn’t anywhere in the vicinity, and why would he be? He had his own district to mind.

Interesting....

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS by Nikolai Gogol, translated by Joachim Neugroschel is another Penguin Christmas Classic. Written in 1831, it is not your everyday "Night Before Christmas" tale. This is the tale of the battle between the devil, and blacksmith Vakula. In this version, the devil is wreaking havoc on the small village of Dilanka, Ukraine. He is also in love with the beautiful, Oksana, the most beautiful girl in Dilanka, and the one Vakula loves himself. An interesting, an mischievous, based on folklore of the Ukraine. Entertaining and interesting. Please be aware it has been translated, and does have some usual and hard to pronounce names, otherwise, and interesting read, with holiday spirit and the trials of evil vs good. While, this was not my favorite of these classics, it was an enjoyable read, none the less and one I would recommend to have in your holiday collection.

who knew....

I never knew that this was the real story about The Night Before Christmas. A story about love and jealousy, snow storms and the devil. Crazy stuff, right? But it is so inspired, so beautiful. I cannot believe I waited so long to read this very short story. It has really changed the way I look at The Night Before Christmas and further strengthens my belief that to really understand literature we must go back to the roots.

A book written to be readable and useful

This is both a terrific introduction and a serious deepening of wound care for the healthcare professional. Physicians: never mind that it is not authored by fellow physicians. It is obviously authored by real-world clinical experts with a passion for mixing the right amount of scientific underpinning with generous portions of "here's how you do it" down-to-earth grittiness. I am a physician who is trained in both surgery and infectious disease, and I would trust myself in the authors' care anytime -- whether as student or as patient. No one writes this clearly or lays out a book this thoughtfully without having the rare "right stuff".

I am using this to try to get my WOCN certification, but even if I don't succeed I feel I have gotten a lot of good information from this book. I think this is a good reference for any nurse with an interest in wound care.

I actually liked this book better than the yellow book that most people recommend using (granted I have both). I found this very helpful to study for my CWS along with the usual yellow wounds book.

About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.
 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

It was half of what I ordered

I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.
