About the Author
Nick Leeson was born in Watford in 1967 and after a stint at Morgan Stanley joined Baring Brothers in 1989. His immediate success led to his transfer to Singapore. The rest is history. In August 1998 it was revealed that he has contracted cancer.

Leeson's Lessons

As it turns out, Nick Leeson does not seem to be a terrible guy, although he single-handedly caused the collapse of one of the oldest banks in the world in early 1995, Barings Bank. I just don't understand how he could let the 88888 account continue for so long once the losses started building. Why not confess? What started with some mistakes and an attempt to hide them soon took on a life of its own and grew out of control. Sure, Barings should have had more internal controls and could have monitored Leeson better, but to think that a young kid from suburban London would outwardly forge reports and signatures to cover his trail is unbelievable. It was fraud and he knew it.

This book is an interesting account of the collapse of one of Britain's oldest and most powerful merchant banks by Nick Leeson while trading derivatives on the Singapore, Nikkei and Osaka stock exchanges. Leeson recreated conversations and the year leading up to his capture with amazing detail, all of which makes for interesting reading. I was interested in the underlying reasons for the collapse of Barings, and thus, the book did drag on a bit. But once Leeson realized he would be discovered and fled Singapore with his wife in late February 1995, the story really got exciting. All in all, an interesting self-account of how covering one's mistakes will lead to lies upon lies, which, as it did with Leeson, will ultimately lead to disaster.

A Fast Paced Personal Apologetic - Great Read

Rogue Trader is a well written, fast paced, intimate first hand apologetic of Nicky Leeson's dealings on the Simex trading floor in Singapore and how he managed to run up huge losses to the tune of £600 million without anyone noticing and breaking one of England's oldest merchant banks. In a world where Jerome Kerviel loses EUR4.9 billion on the back of EUR49.9 billion in unauthorized trades for Société Générale , Bernie Madoff runs a US$50 billion Ponzi scheme, where Lehman Brothers no longer exists and AIG is bailed out by the US government for US$180 billion, the "small" affair of losing £600 million in unapproved futures trades and options gambling doesn't seem so terrible, but it was enough to break one of the oldest merchant banks in the UK and create one of the hugest scandals in banking history at the time. Since Leeson broke Barings, many other financial catastrophes and corporate scandals (Long Term Capital Management, Enron, the dot com bubble and sub-prime mortgages to name a few) have come and gone and some remain with us today. Perhaps these events make Rogue Trader even more relevant today than ever.

It seems ironic that in this account of his misdeeds Mr. Leeson comes across as being incredibly honest about his fraud and his crimes. He doesn't shy away from the things he did and admits that he, and he alone is to blame for the catastrophe that befell Barings. He offers excuses (loyalty to the team, covering up their mistakes etc.) but ultimately the book is clear: once the initial deficit in the famed 88888 error account was cleared, greed to generate large profits on a risky futures spread led to the spiraling effect that eventually accrued severe losses for Barings and finally led to their downfall.

Mr. Leeson's account is also clear about the failings in the system and clear on what could have been done to prevent the losses he had accrued over the time he was doing it. I suppose it is easy in retrospect to question why someone would so easily transfer the tens of millions of pounds on a daily basis to cover margin calls, when the capital base of the bank was only a couple of hundred million. It is also hard to believe how it was possible for him to cover his tracks with lies about unauthorized over the counter deals without those deals being properly audited and investigated. Certainly the blame for the high-risk trading falls squarely on Mr. Leeson's shoulders. He doesn't shy away from it and doesn't hide from it, but there were clearly severe structural faults within the bank and no effective risk-management methodologies employed to ensure honesty in the traders and especially to grant oversight to Mr. Leeson. The greatest weakness in the system was Mr. Leeson being granted the right to manage the trading floor and the back office where trades where reconciled. He even admitted this was open to being corrupted and auditors even noted this was a structural weakness, but they never did close the hole. These structural flaws were noted in the book and as per Mr. Leeson, when reports were released by the Singaporean government, many of these flaws were exposed and blame spread across the board for failure to take note of what was going on.

Rogue Trader also has its tender moments. There is no doubt that Mr. Leeson was deeply in love with his wife at the time and there is no doubt that when they were on the run in Malaysia and Brunei there seemed to be genuine affection and love. Mr. Leeson speaks very highly of Lisa and even though they have since divorced, Rogue Trader shows the affection and passion he had for her and she had for him. Some of the moments they shared were truly touching and should not be second guessed. His portrayal of their relationship was an honest one and never, throughout the book is there a bad word said about Lisa (not that I can remember anyway). He truly loved her and she was in my mind amazing to stand by him through the initial troubles and trials he had to endure.

Rogue Trader is therefore a very personal, very real and very honest account of what happened and what caused the bank to crash. Some parts are amusing, others tragic. It is still a fantastic read 15 years after the fact. Since this book was published, Mr. Leeson has served his time in a Singaporean prison, survived colon cancer, remarried, has written a second book and is now the CEO of a football club. In Rogue Trader Mr. Leeson portrays himself as someone who was haunted by his shadows and who was relieved when they were exposed so he could once again walk in the light. Others who failed to provide proper oversight, could not. Some of those protagonists have reignited their careers (e.g. Peter Norris who was the head of Barings Investment Division is now chairman of the Virgin Group) but many did not. Mr. Leeson, as he says in public talks, will always be remembered as the man who broke Barings Bank, but he has moved on with his life and I for one am glad for him.

A trader going to jail, good story

Over 350 pages (small pages)and easy to read, chronological and a little funny. Entertaining and very detailed account of what Nick Leeson did to cause Baring's Bank to collapse. I would have liked the book more if Nick described his trading in the pit more in his career than just when he was doubling down on his huge losses at the very end. He shows several official statements from authorities and people at the bank. Many people around him were described. I recommend this book to anyone interested in futures trading, bond trading or the Baring's collapse.

First class on micro, not so clear or useful on macro economic theory.

This is an essential for any LSE undergraduate or economics student. It can be used for A Level, but due to its size might be intimidating. As in the heading: you could get by with just this book for a basic understanding of markets, pricing, competition and the firm and the basics of marginal theory without the maths. But for macro economics you will need to go elsewhere.

When you have conquered Lipsey read alternative theories of resource allocation and income distribution: Leontiffian input/output theory to begin with!

There is more than one way to skin a cat! You will then see what an apology for Western Capitalism this version of economic theory is.

At the end of the day this particular re-statement of Marshall and Ricardo is just an elegant intellectual game based on incredible assumptions which is completely devoid of any real life application.

But forgive me. It's for taking exams...it is good for that. I know!

Good Introductory Text on Economics

I used this book on the economics subject during my university days. It enabled me to read the subject from an introductory level and to delve into a more in depth study of this fascinating science.

In a wonderfully readable study aimed at not just the Tolkien fan but any literate person curious about this fantasy author's extraordinary popularity, British scholar Shippey (The Road to Middle-earth) makes an impressive, low-key case for why the creator of Middle-earth is deserving of acclaim. (Recent polls in Britain have consistently put The Lord of the Rings at the top of greatest books of the century lists.) Having taught the same Old English syllabus at Oxford that his subject once did, Shippey is especially well qualified to discuss Tolkien's Anglo-Saxon sources, notably Beowulf, for the elvish languages and names used in the fiction. The author's theory on the origin of the word hobbit, for example, is as learned as it is free of academic jargon. Even his analyses of the abstruse Silmarillion, Tolkien's equivalent of Joyce's Finnegans Wake, avoid getting too technical. Shippey, an expert on Old English literature and the author of The Road to Middle Earth, has written a critical appreciation of the popular creator of The Hobbit and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The subtitle refers to Tolkien's ability to write about concerns of the 20th century (evil, religion, etc.) in stories that at first glance seem to be mere fantasy. Shippey examines Tolkien's published and many unfinished works (such as The Silmarillion), as well as the shorter poems and stories. He convincingly argues that Tolkien deserves to be ranked as a major literary figure. Shippey also castigates those critics, the so-called literati, for their vituperative and ill-informed attacks on Tolkien's reputation and achievements. This study is definitely not an introduction to the "Rings" books; because of the detailed readings on the major and minor works, it should be read by those who have already enjoyed the titles surveyed. Recommended for all public libraries, especially in the wake of the upcoming film version of "The Lord of the Rings"; undergraduate academic libraries will also want to obtain this fine work of criticism. Like J. R. R. Tolkien, Shippey is a philologist who believes that language and literature are inextricably related. Names, especially, carry meaning, and, proceeding from Tolkien's assertion that his fantasy fiction was "fundamentally linguistic in inspiration," Shippey demonstrates how Tolkien used names to generate the plots, moral concepts, and cultural resonance of his works, especially The Lord of the Rings. He argues that Tolkien's larger project was to re-create the prehistory of the Anglo-Saxons by writing the literature suggested by the relationships among old names. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were set near the end of the prehistory he constructed. Shippey maintains that, despite their backward glancing, Tolkien's Middle-Earth stories are essentially modern in their concern with the nature of evil, the hollowness of victory, and--though Tolkien characterized The Lord of the Rings as a Catholic book--deep religious skepticism. However academic such a proceeding may seem, it is keenly interesting because of Shippey's clear, if not uncomplicated, writing and because it substantiates "common" readers' great esteem for Tolkien. In several recent polls, British readers declared that The Lord of the Rings is the greatest book of the twentieth century, to the great dismay, the press noted, of the literati. Similar results of and reactions to polls in America are highly likely, which only makes this magisterial book more intriguing. Ray Olson

Tolkien Criticism for the New Millennium

Starting with Shippey's opening claim that "The dominant literary mode of the twentieth century has been the fantastic," this is a fascinating study of Tolkien, what influenced him, and what he in turn influenced. Shippey discusses the concepts of Evil and Myth, and places Tolkien in a group of "traumatized" authors, mostly veterans, who wrote non-realistic fiction (Orwell, Vonnegut, Golding, CS Lewis, TH White, Heller, and (stretching it a bit) LeGuin). Shippey also continues his examination of the pagan roots of Tolkien's concept of courage from his 1983 "The Road to Middle-earth," and includes a useful chapter on the often-neglected shorter works. His examination of the critics who dismiss Tolkien offers excellent insights into the failures of modern criticism. This book is a good place for the novice reader of Tolkien criticism to start, and there is an extensive bibliography of other critical works. The copy I borrowed on interlibrary-loan is full of post-it notes awaiting transfer to the copy I have on order!

Pretty Good Analysis

Though the best analysis of THE LORD OF THE RINGS is still Paul Kocher's MASTER OF MIDDLE EARTH (and next, TOLKIEN: MAN AND MYTH by Joseph Pearce), this book can sit unashamedly beside them on the shelf of any Tolkienphile. After a superb introduction, the first chapter is a bumpy ride for readers not of a philological bent, as he examines particular words Tolkien may have mined from ancient Anglo-Saxon and Nordic sources and how these words were employed. Occasionally, Shippey makes statements that are too bold: although it's likely Tolkien did read and was familiar with the texts Shippey cites, Shippey fails to always give citations from Tolkien's primary sources to prove it -- or as evidence that Tolkien meant to use individual words in the way Shippey suggests. Additionally, Shippy occasionally suggests that he could read Tolkien's mind, by telling us what Tolkien must've been thinking at a given moment. While interesting speculation, it isn't labeled as such. Too, Shippy's stile and sentence structure is baffling in several places, leaving one to read a sentence several times to figure out the subject. Overall, though, his analysis of Tolkien's works isn't derogatory or negative, as is the case with critics of more stunted imagination or whose templates THE LORD OF THE RINGS refuses to fit. Shippey identifies himself as other than a believing Christian and his examination in those areas is cursory, but nevertheless valid. He also tackles a few of Tolkien's lesser-known works such as the wonderful short story "Leaf by Niggle", which should be more often anthologized. So, if you've re-read your Kocher until the cover's dangling, and you thought the critical survey in Pearce's biography was flawed only in being altogether too brief, this is a solid, positive, and highly informative critical edition and a must for citizens of Middle Earth.

Sometimes things don’t go as we plan or even as we’d like them to go! A great 2nd Chance Love Story!

GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary is one of the best, realistic, gripping, angst-filled, down to earth, and emotional second chance romances to come along in a long time. Faced with mistakes of the past, protecting her son, and their privacy, Gemma realizes the pain she’s caused Travis by not telling him about her feelings, and his son. Now she journeys a path that makes her question every aspect of Travis’ reasoning for following her to Rock Canyon and wanting to be with her and making a go of the marriage that shouldn’t have happened. Does he truly want her or just the connection to his son? Will his lifestyle as a well-known country music star destroy the simple life she leads and her son’s chances of growing up normal?

Some may see Gemma as an angry, unlikable character who snarks at Travis every chance she gets, but I saw her as a woman with whom I could connect and understand her fear, her trepidation, and suspicions because she’d been forced to stand alone against the world to protect her son. Travis wants it all, he wants the family he never had, the unconditional love that only a child can give, and the woman who has always claimed his heart and his dreams. Gemma just has a hard time believing that what she’d always wanted for her life was truly happening, and with the only man she’s every loved.

Codi Gary has created a story about a teenage mother who has carried a secret for ten years always wishing and always wondering what might have been had she’d been brave enough to reveal it when the time was right. Now when the time is at its worst, she’s forced to reveal it and bear the consequences of the pain she causes for both, Travis and her son, as well as friends and herself. I loved this story. I connected with everyone in it, I loved the friendships that exist between Gemma, Gracie, and Mike of which Travis was once part and he now hopes to rekindle. I loved the way the town rallied around the star-crossed lovers and only saw the good in what Gemma thought was the worst. I loved that Travis never gave up hope even when he thought all was lost.

I highly recommend GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary because it’s a story that could’ve happened to anyone - well, except maybe the country-rock star aspect - but for only by the grace of God, go you. If you want to fall in love with an emotional, snagged from the headlines, could’ve really happened, second chance romance, read GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary.

Gemma Carlson went to Vegas to attend a Book Convention, and not to wake up married, most especially to her ex-boyfriend who is now a famous country rock-star.

It was supposedly a weekend only kind of fun, and then when she leaves Vegas, it would just stay there, and not haunt her. But she assumed wrong, because apparently, Travis Bowers, was eager to patch things up between them. So when she ran from him, he followed her. He let her get away all those years ago, he wasn’t going to let her get away this time.

Gemma had always been his first love, and a woman he can’t forget. He might have been famous, and he has all the money in the world, but Gemma had never been far from his thoughts. The moment he saw an opportunity in Vegas, he immediately grabbed it. He invited her over a few drinks, which led to that impromptu marriage, and yes, she ran away from him the moment she was able to. When he tried to follow her, he was in for the biggest surprise in his life when he found out he has a nine-year old son.

"Ten years ago he’d been a kid, unsure of what he wanted. He was a man now. And he wasn’t giving up his wife without a damn good reason."

Suddenly, her quiet town life turns a 180, and she was once again the talk of the town.

Despite being frustrated over Gemma’s actions – the running away, and the impulsiveness: you gotta let her have it! Because she’s a great mother to Charlie, she even allowed him to know his father. All she wanted was to protect him from Travis’ lifestyle. She didn’t want any harm to come to her son – so you can’t really blame her if she kept on pushing him away or she kept this secret for a whole period of time. When she was pregnant, Travis was on the verge of stardom, and being a young pregnant girl with all those weird hormones kicking inside your system, not to mention fear and yes, her impulsiveness, she broke up with him instead of telling him she was pregnant.

Travis, on the other hand, had grew up in foster care so he knows what it is like to grow up without a family. The moment he knew of his child’s existence, he took it with arms wide open. He didn’t know the first thing of becoming a father, but he did it with flying colors. Day by day, he creeps into their lives, and embeds himself into it. In fairness to them, they try to be civil and good parents whenever Charlie is around, and talk about their issues when he wasn’t.

Despite being okay, the past is still an issue, and not to mention TRUST. It was the elephant in the room they didn’t want to address at first, until it blew up into their faces and tore apart whatever it is that they started building. Both of them can be stubborn and needed a good, painful wakeup call before they can settle their issues. It was a long, rocky journey before the reconciliation. I started hating Gemma somewhere, but the grand gestures at the end of the story - makes up for everything else.

I have always adored plots like this, it’s old, it’s reused countless of times which probably makes it harder for the author on how to make it different from the rest. But Codi Gary made sure Good Girls Don’t Date Rock Stars will be different enough to make you want to finish the book once you get started. It’s romance will make you swoon, characters that you will love and will annoy you at one point, and steamy scenes that will get you hot. But what I love most about this book is its emphasis on the importance of trust and honesty in a relationship. Without this two, a relationship could never be possible.

"Maybe that’s what makes it so hard. When you spend years thinking and dreaming about someone and have them fall back into your life? Sounds like fate to me."

The chemistry between Travis and Gemma sparks and the sex is hot.

“’You don’t even know who I am anymore,’ she said softly. ‘I’d like to remedy that, if you’re willing,’ he said, brushing his mouth over hers. “What do you say? One more chance?’”

Gemma Carlson was a shy, chubby girl who got bullied quite a bit when she was young. She learned to box up her emotions and just roll with it. Then sophomore year of high school, a new boy moved to town, Travis Bowers. Travis was “the hot musician with the killer smile and drawling voice” and she had the biggest crush on him. Turns out he also liked her. He was an aspiring musician and was signed shortly after graduation. Only problem was she was pregnant. She wanted to tell him, but would that make him give up his dreams to stay with her? She couldn’t risk it, so she kept it from him. Now ten years later they are staying in the same Vegas hotel, you can only imagine what happens next.

“He could hold out hope for second chances, but he couldn’t lose himself in her too soon”

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fairly typical romance, but it kept me hooked and wanting to know what would happen next. All romances have that bit of drama that tears the couple apart. Usually I think to myself, oh he/she’s being ridiculous. In this book, the drama is believable. The issues this couple are dealing with are realistic as are the fall out and resolution. The chemistry between Travis and Gemma sparks and the sex is hot. I give this book 4.5 stars and 3 hands down the pants. I would definitely read other books in this series.

I found the Part 1 book to be excellent. The chapters are well-written and the sequence of ...

I’ve worked through the entirety of Part 1 of this two part edition. I bought both Part 1 and 2, but have yet to delve into Part 2.

I found the Part 1 book to be excellent. The chapters are well-written and the sequence of topics for the chapters are logically organized to allow you to learn Autodesk Inventor. The book progresses from learning the basics of Inventor to more and more challenging and advanced topics.

Each chapter first gives an explanation how to use a particular set of the tool(s) or feature(s) and the variations you could encounter. After this, you are given one or more exercises to practice using the tool. Each tool or feature discussed in the chapter will have a practice exercise. You can download the files that will be used for the practice exercises. This is highly recommended since some of the models used are quite complex and you don’t have to build them from scratch. On second thought, that would have been a nice addition for more advanced students - a section in the book allowing you to construct the models that will be used to explain certain features of the program.

At the end of each chapter there is a series of questions to test your knowledge of what was discussed in the chapter.

The only negative comment I have concerns some of the images used to illustrate the use of tools and features. All the images in the book are black and white and shades of gray. As is common nowadays, many books are published on lower quality paper and images are not reproduced with their original colors. This is understandable because of the expense to the publisher. However, some of the images in the book are so dark it is difficult to see what is being illustrated. Inventor uses different colors to emphasize selections and features while you are working. Unfortunately, none of these colors are shown in the book. This, of course, is not the fault of the authors, but of the publisher.

In spite of the last comment, I still rate the book as 5 stars. I’m looking forward to working my way through Part 2.

Good tutorial for people with prior skills.

This is part 1. I was proficient at Acad 3d drawing some years back and largely still proficient with 2d cad drawing. This is part 1 and lays a foundation to continue on to part 2. These books both seem to be directed toward someone with some degree of cad skills and some knowledge of 3d drafting. I would rate the book fairly high on the tutorial guide however, it does start skipping the actual tutorial instruction and expects you to know how to draw certain parts. This is not a problem but it would be a welcome addition for there to be a note or signal that the reader is expected to draw the part shown. Most tutorials were pretty clear, however, like any book of this nature there are some gaps where something isn't clear. In some cases that's not a bad thing since it requires the user to work through the program on their own or do additional research. All in all, I would recommend the book.

About the Author
Daniel is a direct and fun individual, who really loves his profession. By looking at this cheerful chef, you understand that what you see is a professional that loves what he does. He is from the Francophone part of Canada (Montreal, Quebec). Cooking is his profession. Traveling is his lifestyle. Now, it's been 20 years that Daniel has traveled and worked as a chef worldwide: Argentina, China, Japan, England, Ireland, Thailand, Germany, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, and Netherlands. Surprisingly, in his youth, this Canadian wanted to dedicate his life to hockey. But a Meniscus trauma prevented the fulfillment. Not having good enough examination results made it impossible for him to join the Police. In result, Daniel decided to try out cooking. Starting in Canada, he soon moved to Japan and worked in Tokyo sushi-bars as a chef's apprentice. After three years, Roy unexpectedly got offered to become a chef. Various, prestigious restaurants started inviting him by offering large amounts of money. But, Daniel chose another path. In 1998, he left to a small French village to apprehend the cooking secrets of his ancestors. The cook decided that only direct contact with locals allowed him to perceive the smallest details about the national cuisine. Then followed Thailand, Australia, and Argentina. Already in 2001, he opened his first restaurant in Canada. Now, his empire consists of 9 (concept-restaurants), 8 of which are out of Canada. Roy finds time to guide a school of cooking art and is thinking about leading the publishing office. Traveling became his second passion. By traveling, he finds new inspirations for cooking — that's his secret to success. People in all countries love the food that is offered in Roy restaurants, because it's not only tasty, but also exceptional. Daniel generously shares his secrets, thinking that you can copy a recipe but not the soul of a cook.

I love bbq and I must say Daniel is a bbq genius, I personally tried a lot of his recipes, these days we can even use grill on microwave but no one really knows all the secrets this book has lot of those tips to make a nice bbq to remember

You can't get bored of the meat cooked on fire: Shiny sauce, some garnish, the mixture of smoke's odor and spices give you a special smell that you can't forget. The process of cooking is very complicated, where all of your movements need to be sharpened over all the years that you cook, same amount of time goes for finding the perfect ingredients.
In Daniel Roy's book you won't find any debates like which kind of meat is better, why that marinade is the proper one, instead you'll find lots of recipes on how to cook meat and not only. All of that followed by interesting stories and rips of an experienced traveler and cook.

I love cooking, and one of the best way to cook food is through grilling. However, most of us are guilty about just putting that piece of meat on top of a hot charcoal, and that's it. After reading this book, it further explained to me why it is important to also choose the best charcoal, to get the best taste of meat. The recipes are also mouth watering, I also felt hungry after reading the book. What I liked the most about this book is the life hack that was given after the recipe, I got a lot of tips and guides and I will surely apply it to my next barbecue party.
