5 'sexy firefighter + Mr. Mayor' stars
By Amanda L.
After loving Even the Score and Playing with Fire by Kate Meader, she is on my list of must read authors. She knows how to write sexy, edgy, expert in cranking up the heat and building up the sexual tension between characters and an engaging unputdownable plot. Is the kind of easy to read dirty romance that you will want to finish in one sitting and end up with a big smile on your face.
Alexandra Dempsey is the female firefighter who had to work extra hard to prove her worth. She had it with her overbearing and protective brothers and her colleagues can't wait to make a snide comment about her gender every chance they got. Is no wonder she is a spitfire, a hothead and a tough a nail chick. But under her hard exterior, is a woman looking for her one true love and wouldn't mind going out on countless dates and kiss enough frogs to finally meet her prince.
Here comes, Eli Cooper, Mr. Mayor of Chicago, a chauvinistic pig and all around caveman who doesn't believe in Alex and her capability. He loves calling her Alexandra, to remind her of her femininity.
"Splinter. Short for Splinter in My Side. I was going to call you Thorn, but you're not worthy of being a thorn, Alexandra. You're a minor annoyance."
There seems to be a lot of backstory in regards to Alex's family and why they hate Eli so much. Although I wish I read the previous books in the series, it didn't deter my enjoyment of this one.
I love the whole sexy-hate thing that they have going on. It just pure deliciousness to see them going head to head and wonder are they gonna bang or kill each other off.
"Oh, God. Please stop talking. I hate you so much right now."
"That's okay, because I'm crazy enough about you for both of us."
After Alex saved Eli from a fire in a hotel, Eli decided that Alex is the best bet for him to win some blue color votes. Is winning is his only agenda or is there something more?
What can I say? Eli and Alex are such great match, the whole opposite attract and all that. Eli is all he-man and everything that Alex despise, but she can't ignore the fact that his dominance makes her feel oh so very female and for the first time she might just want to be care for.
"I guess what I'm asking is: What am I to you, Eli? Am I a woman or a firefighter?"
"What you are to me is... Alexandra. And she defies categorization."
Honestly, I don't know whether is it wrong of me to forgive the things that Eli did so easily. He is such a pathological liar, maybe is comes with the job description. I sympathize with him though and wish Alex wouldn't be so hard on him. Does this woman need to be so holier than thou.
Eli is a man living with some big secrets and guilt. I'm still wondering about his motivation behind being a mayor. Because knowing the truth about his backstory, I thought he might follow another path. Anyway, nothing beat Mr. Sexy Mayor.
"Eli, heroes don't all wear capes or fire helmets or badges. They also wear dog tags."
Okay, my fantasy of reading a sex scene on the fire truck did not come to fruition. But this book had enough sexiness and hotness to tide me over. With the hint I got from seeing Brady and Gage, I think I will head over to read their book next. I'm sure is gonna be a yummy M/M.
"Who needs the fairy tale when crazy, messy, sexy reality with the woman I adore is a million times better?"

An enemies to lovers romance that will make you laugh and fall in love.
By Kim
Playing with Fire, the second full length novel in Kate Meader’s Hot in Chicago series is a standalone read. As with the previous books, Kate brings heat. But I found this one to be a little more humorous than others. After all, this is a enemies to lovers romance with a fiery heroine and a buttoned up politician hero.
I don't think I've been so conflicted about a hero before. I love Eli Cooper. I’m not even sure how that is even possible. Eli is arrogant, chauvinistic, and does whatever it takes to get what he wants. But all of his actions come from a good place. Thus in the end, he leaves you with no choice but to love him.
I’m not sure how I missed it, but Alexandra Dempsey is a full figured heroine. I love that!!! Even better, she’s comfortable in her own skin. Alex is....in a league all on her own. She isn't a damsel who needs rescuing. She has the mouth of a sailor. She defends herself and her family without thinking. She's a loose cannon. But this is what makes her perfect for prim and proper Eli Cooper.
The Dempseys and the Coopers go back a long way. In fact, the fathers were partners in Dempsey’s on Damen back in the day. Today, that friendship and camaraderie doesn’t exist. Eli is the mayor of Chicago. Alex and her foster brothers are Chicago firefighters, known as the Firefightin’ Dempseys. As mayor, Eli has been coming down hard on the Dempseys in the last couple of months, due to their actions both on duty and off.
It’s no secret there are sparks between these two. When Alex saves Eli from a fire, the frenzy about them being a couple goes crazy. With Eli’s poll numbers dropping and with election day only weeks away, the idea forms to use Alex to get voters and the unions on his side. In order to accomplish this, Eli turns to extortion/blackmail to get Alex to pretend to be his girlfriend in public. Lines get blurred and the spark between these two turns into a full fledged fire.
I generally know what I’m going to get when I pick up one of Kate Meader’s books. It’s a given there will heated moments. It’s a given she will have you laughing. It’s a given you will embrace the characters. What surprised me was the back and forth banter between Eli and Alex. The two have this push and pull relationship where Eli wants to control Alex and get her to conform to his ways. Unfortunately for him, he’s never met anyone like Alex. Something else that surprised me was Eli himself. Underneath his thousand dollar suits and his calm cool demeanor this very refined man is a dirty talker. Hello.
If you’re looking for an enemies to lovers romance that will make you laugh and fall in love with the characters, Playing with Fire is for you. I’m really looking forward to the next book in this series. The mystery of just who oldest Dempsey sibling Wyatt Fox is will finally be revealed. I can’t wait.

So much to love about it!
By The Sassy Bookster
Kate Meader delivers on the promise of Alexandra and Eli in spades! Chicago is on fire and it's not the buildings! All that blazing, over-the-top chemistry between Eli and Alex, the snarky banter, the vibrant characters, all of these add up to one absolutely sexy and engaging read.
Alexandra Dempsey is one of a kind. With a very large personality, she's strong, outspoken, feisty and loyal to those she holds dear. As the only girl in a family of macho, overprotective males, Alexandra learned early to assert herself and she's more than a match for the males she works with in her job as a firefighter. Only one man has ever been able to get under her skin: Eli Cooper, the Windy City's swoon-worthy mayor. The problem? She dislikes him with a passion, but her body does not seem to have received that memo because only a glance from him is enough to set her on fire and now that she finds herself in a tight spot, he's the only thing standing between her and ruin.
Eli is a politician all the way through, charismatic and used to getting his way. Never one to let an opportunity pass by, he skillfully manipulates the situation with Alex for his own benefit and while it appears to be all for political purposes, the truth is that Eli can't stay away from her. But even as they keep the public pre-occupied with talking about their relationship, all is not well. Eli is keeping secrets, the kind that are certain to damage his campaign and re-election chances as well as what he's building with Alex.
Eli and Alex were so hot and so good together that I can't imagine that Ms. Meader will be able to top them. For someone used to getting everything he wanted easily, Eli had to work hard to get Alex and I love that she was not a pushover but made him earn her. Everything about their relationship was wild and passionate and their conversations, one-liners and wisecracks were so entertaining to read. I love that they both saw the real person beneath their public personas and brought out the best in each other. And their sexual chemistry? It was enough to set the city on fire.
Ms. Meader succeeded in making me love Eli. Not the slick mayor, but the little boy with a huge case of hero worship who discovered that his hero had feet of clay. Eli started out as an opportunist ready to play every angle for his benefit, but in the end he redeemed himself and honestly, there is no bigger declaration of love than single-handedly demolishing everything you've built just to prove your sincerity.
There is so much to love about this story. Steamy sex, snappy dialogue, funny moments and a lot of family make PLAYING WITH FIRE a must-read.
