highlights socio-economic and political issues in an entertaining play

I first read this play when I was 14. I didn't understand all the socio-economic and political issues until I was 19. It was during this period that I became a confirmed socialist (or rather left leaning in my politics).

When I first read the play - I remember a few classmates being confused that one family encountered the same girl, which went beyond coincidence - far too contrived. This is NOT the case - that's just a twist - if you had assumed that than you'll not be able to sympathise with Eva Smith's plight (society prefers strong characters even if s/he are victims suffering the utmost misfortune).

The play intends to illustrates the inequality between the classes, and how dangerous this inequitable situation is if there are no safeguards. Eva is just a random chick - imagine if things were going against you because you "dallied" with the a powerful/wealthy family/ corporate/ entity - well if there are no laws protecting you - you are screwed.

Prior to Clement Atlee's government, there was no Welfare State. Poor single women who became pregnant were abandoned. Women were also too frightened to report incidents of rape if committed by a member of the "respectable" class.

There was no NHS, hence healthcare was the luxury of the privileged classes (prior to the NHS child mortality rates were obscene).

The play conveys the vulnerability of women such as Eva. We see how Sheila (a middleclass wealthy girl) uses her wealth to intimidate a shopkeeper into sacking Eva over a whim. This action demonstrates the lack of employment laws and the necessity to enforce these laws.

Synopsis: The play is a three-act drama, which takes place on a single night in 1912, focusing on the prosperous middle-class Birling family, who live in a comfortable home in Brumley, "an industrial city in the north Midlands".The family is visited by a man calling himself Inspector Goole, who questions the family about the suicide of a young working-class woman, Eva Smith (also known as Daisy Renton). The family are interrogated and revealed to have been responsible for the young woman's exploitation, abandonment and social ruin, effectively leading to her death. Long considered part of the repertory of classic "drawing room" theatre, the play has also been hailed as a scathing critique of the hypocrisies of Victorian/Edwardian English society and as an expression of Priestley's Socialist political principles.

Thought-Provoking

This is a must-read. I re-read it recently and simply became engrossed, as I had been the first time I read it many years ago. This is, arguably, J.B. Priestley's masterpiece (though some would opt for the Good Companions instead). I was lucky enough to see the staged production about 15 or so years back, which was fairly true to form and every bit as interesting. The central tenet of this work, which becomes stamped in every reader's mind long afterwards, is that our actions have consequences. More specifically, be careful how your words and actions impact others. Thought-provoking, to say the least.

*Starred Review* This excellent, sumptuously illustrated book accompanied the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York that ran from December 2011 to March 2012. It has six introductory essays and analyzes 138 portraits in painted panels, pencil drawings, marble sculpture, and bronze medals. In time, Flemish realism brilliantly fused with Italian humanism to create a new sense of the value of the individual personality and to place a correspondingly high value on the portrait itself. This innovative art justified Hans Holbein’s proud inscription on his portrait of Derich Born, who lacked only breath to seem truly alive and responsive: “Add but the voice and you have his whole self, that you may doubt whether the painter or the father has made him.” These Renaissance artists explored their ideal of beauty—women with blonde hair, high foreheads, fair complexions, and long necks—and also sought to reveal virtue, the inward character, through the subject’s outward appearance. Techniques of portraiture evolved from the simple to the complex forms that have endured to the present day. In about 1425, subjects were depicted in stark profile or as dual portraits against a dark background. Later they were presented full face, establishing eye contact with the observer, set against a deeper space and an open window with an expansive background. Subjects might have a suggestive gaze or gesture, accompanied by symbolic animals and attributes, and a three-quarter pose that turned reflectively away from the viewer. These magnificent portraits justify Leon Alberti’s claim that they bestowed eternal life and fame by preserving the memory and virtues of the subject: “Painting possesses a truly divine power in that not only does it make the absent present, but it also represents the dead to the living many centuries later, so they are recognized by spectators with pleasure and deep admiration for the artist.” --Jeffrey Meyers

An ugly nose but a beautiful painting

This book is the catalog for a wonderful exhibition at the Met in NYC, which benefited from major loans from all over the world, especially from the Louvre, the Queen of England's private collection and Italian museums. From the cover illustration (a masterpiece by Ghirlandaio), to great drawings by Pisanello, works by Mantegna, Boticelli, Antonello da Messina (who imported the oil painting technique to Italy, learning it from the Flemish), sculptures, medals, prints, the art of the Renaissance portrait is studied in depth, with each work accompanied by a thorough essay and a detailed historical provenance.

The quality of the reproductions is among the best I have seen in any artbook. Probably one of the best art publications to come to the market in recent years.

This is another blockbuster catalogue from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It accompanied the exhibition of the same name mounted first at the Bode-Museum in Berlin in August 2011 and continuing in New York until March 2012. It is a magnificent volume and has justly proved so much in demand that a second printing was necessary, causing a temporary hiatus in its availability. Anyone interested in Renaissance art or in the history of portraiture would be well advised to acquire it now at its original publication price, because it is an absolute must-have and, at 420 pages, is likely to remain the definitive study for some time. Five very informative introductory essays by eminent art historians introduce and discuss the major issues involved in considering the art. These are followed by a catalogue of 168 excellent reproductions, each expertly commented by a specialist in the field and accompanied by full historical provenance and a list of selected references (and there is also an excellent index and general bibliography). The scholarship is so up-to-date that I encountered at least one reference to an article published just a few months before the catalogue itself.

The scope is broad, and although the emphasis is on painting, all the other major media--bronze, brass, marble, terra-cotta and the all-important portrait medal (pride of the aristocracy because of its durability and ease of reproduction and transportation)--are also fully considered. And although the great majority of the artists presented are Italian, some Northerners like Rogier van der Weyden and his pupil Hans Memling are also discussed in terms of their relationship with Italian patrons. The only reason we know the story of the Exodus happened in Egypt is because the Bible says so. We keep on believing that is the case because mainstream Egyptologists just went along with the Biblical narrative and absentmindedly designated Egypt’s Kings as Pharaohs. But if we examined the Hebrew text the Bible (currently in our hands) used as a reference we will strangely not find Egypt mentioned in it as the site/land of the Exodus story. The whole mess/deception took place during translating the Hebrew/Aramaic stories into Greek back in the third century BC. This is when Egypt was first hijacked and forcibly placed in the Hebrew Bible as the theater of the Israelite landmark stories. Ironically this whole act of duplicity took place on Egyptian soil and specifically at its legendary library of Alexandria.
But what if the Bible as we know it has long been tampered with?
• What if the first western translation of the so-called Israelite stories, that came to be known as the Septuagint Bible, was a distorted translation?
• What if the Israelite stories we all have been made to believe took place in Egypt simply did not?

Of all the claims and evidence put forward by the author, one thing sticks with me more than any other and that is "Egypt and Egyptians were mentioned in the Bible around seven hundred times. Could you imagine that, seven hundred times and not even once the pyramid, the wonder of antiquity, was referred to in the Israelite stories". All throughout history any person of who has been to Egypt have always mentioned the Pyramids in their writings, the bible is the only book that doesn't. For me that makes it clear that the stories did not take place in that part of the world as stated by the bible.

Dr. Ezzat's new book is a game changer in that it challenges the mainstream version of Old Testament scholarship by insisting Egyptian records show no knowledge of the Israelites, which casts serious doubt on the traditional Jewish history that Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt, and Moses later led the Israelites out of Egypt to the Promised Land in Palestine. The author makes a strong case that events typically portrayed as happening in Egypt really took place in southwestern Arabia. His use of the testimony of established Egyptologists make a convincing case that when the Old Testament was translated into Greek in the second century BC, the 70 rabbis who did the translating gave the Hebrews a much more important role in history than they actually had, and badly slandered the Egyptians as immoral slave owners, which was something they had never been. This is a must read for those who want to debunk the phony Jewish assertions in the Old Testament.

My hat off to you also Dr. Ezzat! Finally someone has come out with true history that can be traced. I just read your book and it confirmed what I have been thinking ever since I read the Sumerian Tablets...I saw huge copyright issues with the Torah/Bible OT right away.. I thought wow the Tablets make the Bible make sense..:) Well of course they did word for word almost. All they did was change a few words but it was easy to spot. Makes sense why they won't let anyone into Saudi Arabia where they say are the remains of an alter that they think may have been in the desert where the Israelites were supposed to have been. The Elite are destroying everything in the Middle East to wipe out any evidence so that when they bring in their one world Religion they will be able to draw everyone under one mass religious control. Most are ignorant of any real history of their own faith's that they will be sucked in without mercy. Thank you for confirming what I had already believed; like you said the religions of the Jewish people Torah and the Arab people are just to close not to be one and the same. That has bothered me for a long time.. I had come to the conclusion that Rome had had their hands in it but it is just as you have stated. I will pass this book to as many people as I can to wake up the masses so their can finally be PEACE in the world.

Excellent & scholarly

Written by some of the leading western experts who studied for years in Japan, this is an excellent introduction to the ancient Koryu or old arts of Japan. The book focuses mainly on the weapons arts using the sword, yari (spear), naginata (halberd), and so on, but jujutsu and the grappling arts also get discussed. Some of these authors were familiar to me from their contributions to martial arts journals like Furyu or the online Electronic Journal of the Martial Arts, like Ellis Amdur. Meik Skoss, the husband of Diane, was part of Draeger's original research team that went to Indonesia that resulted in Draeger's books covering Pentjak-Silat and the other Indonesian bladed arts, so I had high expectations about the quality and depth of the articles, and I wasn't disappointed.
As far as the coverage of the various arts is concerned, one thing that needs to be mentioned, since most people who study a martial art in the U.S. are studying karate or a similar boxing art like TKD or kung-fu, is that there isn't any coverage of that, since karate didn't arrive in Japan from Okinawa until the 1920s, and Japan really had no native tradition of boxing like ancient China, although China had a grappling art similar to jujustu in the art of chin na, and in the north there was Mongolian wrestling. Jujutsu did have atemi-waza, or striking techniques, but it wasn't a separate art and didn't develop to the same extant that it did in China and Okinawa before being introduced into Japan. Why this is I don't know, but I point it out just in case.
I had one other comment about the Hunter Armstrong chapter. He discusses in detail iaido, which he feels has lost the combative aspect, if it ever had it, pointing out that drawing the sword isn't an issue on the battlefield since you'll already be in the ready with your sword drawn, and in the heat of battle, if you have to draw your sword, it's probably too late anyway. Draeger brings this issue up too in his book, and that especially since the end of WWII iaido curriculums have been modified to make them more artistic than combative.
While this may be true, this problem isn't unique to iai or kendo or the other weapons arts. Karate has the same problem too, and so do the other unarmed martial arts. Unless you are willing to put on the heavy contact gear and risk getting your head bashed in, you're not participating in the ultimate combative aspect of the art, either. Although the samurai of previous centuries honed their arts and skills on the crucible of the battlefield and in individual duels, this isn't medieval Japan anymore, and is no longer practical. So although I would agree with Armstrong that the paired partner practice is certainly more realistic than the solo katas of iai, even that doesn't come very close to the original environment, and I don't see much help for the situation unless people are willing to make pretty radical changes that are unlikely, if only for the liability reasons.
Overall, this is a fine collection of articles about various aspects of the old Japanese martial traditions that are still poorly understood in the west and outside of Japan in general.

An insightful primer for studying Bujutsu/Budo

I first became interested in studying Bujutsu and its lasting impact on modern martial arts as an exponent of Judo and the short staff (jo). As my interests grew more towards the cultural backgrounds of these arts, I was pointed to the Draeger books and Secrets of the Samurai. Having no prior base of information, these complex and deeply analytical books left me even more confused. What I found in "Koryu Bujutsu" was a way to simplify some of the jargon that was found in the deeper research. It also gave me a bit of insight as to why certain instructors teach the way they do, and that a sensei that constantly points out your mistakes is better than one that just lets you work. To paraphrase a line in the book: Kobudo is not a proper term for these arts, because the term kobudo implies that they are dead arts. Koryu bujutsu tells us that these ancient arts continue to effect the techniques learned in the dojo to this day.

A faultless jewel in the martial artists' library !

It has been a pleasure to read Diane Skoss book. Since Donn Draeger's works, no author has touched on martial arts history, principles and ideas, with such expertise and knowledge. Diane is a true heir to "Bun Bu Ryo Do"(the pen and the sword, the same thing), the idea that the true martial artist must not only have technical proficiency, but culture and moral character as well. Buy this book and any other by Skoss : you won't regret it and it will raise your comprehension of the martial art you train in or, if you practice none, you'll have a better insight on japanese culture. Every year the 1965 war is celebrated remorselessly to keep under wraps the failures of our leadership at the time. I feel cheated and enraged at the loss of the many gallant men who were martyred believing they were fighting for a sacred cause. The 1971 war was a corollary to the 1965 war and the Kargil conflict followed in the same vein. Shallow personal interests were projected as national interests by dictators. All these wars and conflicts proved to be catastrophic for the economy and security of Pakistan. Were these conflicts avoidable? If not, why were they not planned and directed with professional dexterity? Why were no lessons learnt from each disaster? Such questions have hardly been addressed candidly from fear of retribution by the powers that be.

A great read from a daring Pakistan pilot

Its a great read. The writer has written a great account about his life in PAF, about 2 wars with India in 1965 and 1971. 1965 war is glorified in Pakistan as a defense day, when the Pakistani troops successfully defended Pakistan. here lies the tales, who did it and the credit! Now, Pakistan was ruled by Army (martial law). Field Marshal along with Army took all the credit but it was actually the air force that did the job against all odds (numerical superiority of IAF)plus poor planing by the Pakistani generals. PAF saved the skin!

The writer is a passionate Pakistani, wrote about the politics that plagued the defence forces and how upright officers were always sidelined (one being himself- another that i think would be Cecil Chaudhary another PAF pilot)

He has set the record straight by debunking many exaggerated accounts but maintains as accepted by the Indian side ( PVS Mohan books) that PAF performed exceptionally well against the indian airforce. Ironny was that IAF learnt its lessons in the upcoming war while Pakistan troops did not and lost the 1971 war!

Excellent and very moving Book! The author gives an insider's perspective into the PAF's courage in the hour of Pakistan's need. The book highlights the highly intelligent and motivated Pakistanis that have built and secured Pakistan's future as well as shining a revealing light on those who have put their selfish and treasonous desires before the well being of the Pakistani people. This book is a bright beacon of the much needed truth that has been sorely missing in establishment narratives. Well done Sajad Haider. In the end, truth will out and Pakistan shall rise again.
