From Publishers Weekly
Noted photographer Friedlander ( Nudes ) exquisitely preserves jazz history in 94 photographs, taken between 1957 and 1974, of New Orleans clubs and bands, and of the city's fabled performers. His portraits and street scenes include subjects such as Johnny St. Cyr with his arms resting on his guitar, Robert Pete Williams playing for his wife, and Manuel "Fess" Manetta playing two horns at the same time. Friedlander took many of these pictures while accompanying jazz scholars Richard Allen and William Russell as they conducted interviews for Tulane University's Archive of New Orleans Jazz. New Yorker critic Balliett's recollections of a 1966 trip to New Orleans provide a vibrant context for Friedlander's work. He retells stories about Buddy Bolden, Bunk Johnson and Buddy Petit, while trumpeter Red Allen eloquently describes what funeral and parade brass bands looked and sounded like 50 years ago.

Way down yonder in New Orleans
By Robin
Lee Friedlander took these photos between 1957 and 1974, though unfortunately none of them are dated. The first fifty are mainly portraits at home or group shots of performers in clubs; the remaining forty-four are of bands marching on the streets of New Orleans. I think it's probably safe to say that virtually all these performers have now passed away. All of them must have been around when jazz was still in its origins in the city.

I thought the street scenes had more impact than the portraits. Turn the pages and you come across the style of photo which I think is typical Friedlander: a tightly packed composition of shapes that mixes the foreground, middle and distance in a dense format that produces tonal shapes and a playful confusion. The sort of photos that you can frequently return to and find something new each time. His books Lee Friedlander: Sticks & Stones and Lee Friedlander: The Desert Seen are full of these lovely stylistic shots. `Jazz people' is a mildly interesting book of photos, taken some decades ago but it didn't contain too many of the sort of Friedland shots I enjoy.

The book's production is excellent: matt art paper with 250 screen duotones (prints and separations by Richard Benson and Thomas Palmer) and design by Katy Homans, these three are regular production contributors to Friedlander books.
